La Hueste de Ánimas

The ”Hueste de Ánimas” (Host of Souls) is a collaboration between the illustrator Tomás Hijo, the researcher Jesús Callejo and the sculptor Miguel Elisardo Bueno, based on the book “El mundo encantado de Castilla y León” edited by the Ethnographic Museum (Zamora). It is a procession of doomed souls that travel at night along the lonely roads of León (Spain). If you find it and you’re not careful, they’ll take you with them. Other names and manifestations are the Holy Company from Galicia, Güestia from Asturias and Huestantigua from Castilla. They are also related to the Sluagh na marbh (Host of the Dead) from Ireland and Scotland and the Wild Hunt from Northern Europe.
Our sculpture is manufactured using traditional methods and cutting edge technology: It’s been modeled in clay, molded with silicone and casted in polyurean marble resin. The most delicate pieces that are the objects they carry in their hands are modeled using virtual reality with ultraviolet photopolymeric printing resin. Finally, it is hand-painted in acrylics, finished with Judean bitumen patina and a light touch of pearlescent mica.
This work is extremely faithful to the original illustration, reflecting not only the general shape but also the notches carved by Tomás Hijo’s gouge during the process of creating the print.
Given the complexity of the design, full of chiaroscuro and nooks and crannies, each Host must be treated with exceptional care and attention to achieve this level of detail. It weighs almost 0.45 lb and the impression to the touch is stone-like. The measurements are the same of the original engraving plate of Tomás Hijo: 3.3 x 5.3 x 2 inches.

La Hueste de Ánimas es una colaboración entre el ilustrador Tomás Hijo, el investigador Jesús Callejo y el escultor Miguel Elisardo Bueno, basada en el libro "El mundo encantado de Castilla y León" editado por el Museo Etnográfico (Zamora). Es una comitiva de almas en pena que va de noche por los caminos solitarios de la zona de León. Si te la encuentras y no tienes cuidado te llevará con ellos en procesión. Otras formas de referirse a ella son: La Santa Compaña (Galicia), Güestia (Asturias) y Huestantigua (Castilla). También está relacionada con los Sluagh na marbh de Irlanda y Escocia y el Wild Hunt del Norte de Europa.
Nuestra escultura está fabricada mediante métodos tradicionales y tecnología punta: ha sido modelada en arcilla, molde de silicona y de material definitivo resina poliúrea cargada hasta la saturación de polvo de mármol.
Las piezas más delicadas que son los objetos que portan en sus manos están modeladas mediante realidad virtual y hechas con resina de impresión fotopolimérica ultravioleta. Por último, está pintada a mano en acrílicos y patinada a la cera y betún de Judea.
Este trabajo es extremadamente fiel a la ilustración original, reflejando no solo la forma general si no también las muescas realizadas por la gubia de Tomás Hijo durante el proceso de creación del grabado.
Dada la complejidad del diseño, lleno de claroscuros y recovecos, cada hueste ha de ser tratada con mimo y atención excepcionales para conseguir este nivel de detalle. Pesa casi 200 gramos y la impresión al tacto es marmórea, como de piedra. Las medidas son las mismas del grabado original de Tomás Hijo: 8.5 x 13.5 x 5 centímetros.
